Travel Program

Overview

Each year, NGS fields 25 – 30 travel teams for players in grades 3 -12 who represent NGS in spirited competition with teams from other communities. The Travel program provides a more competitive alternative to our City program and requires a commitment to playing for two seasons. Teams typically practice twice a week and play games on Saturday mornings in Newton or neighboring towns as members of the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) league. Many teams also attend tournaments, particularly on Memorial and Columbus Day weekends.

Everyone who registers on time makes a team — there are no cuts in the NGS Travel Program. The program aims to provide a positive, competitive community-based soccer experience for players of all levels while creating balanced and developmentally appropriate teams across all grades. This is not a private club soccer program. We encourage families to maintain realistic expectations regarding team placement, training frequency, and competition level.

Our goals are simple:

  • Form teams of similarly skilled players
  • Ensure every player can contribute
  • Ensure every player is appropriately challenged
  • Help players develop a lifelong love of the game

Youth sports provide tremendous physical, emotional, and social benefits for children, and we hope our players continue participating in sports long into adulthood.

Placement on travel teams is determined by each player’s skill level using assessment data and coach evaluations. Registrants are divided into grade-based divisions and placed on teams that range from division 1 (highly skilled, highly competitive) to division 4 (less skilled, more recreational). No matter what the divisional level, girls enjoy wearing the Newton travel uniform and representing NGS in spirited competition with teams from other communities.
