The Grassroots Coaching Pathway is designed to empower coaches of all levels with accessible education that is relevant to their specific needs. The Grassroots Licenses will help coaches create fun, enjoyable, player-centered, and developmentally appropriate environments for their team. Eight US Soccer grassroots level coaching courses form the foundation of the pathway. Offered in-person or online, the 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11 courses focus on experiential learning and a Play-Practice-Play model.
Prospective coaches have the option to partake in any of these courses – in any sequence – after completing a cost-free, Introduction to Grassroots Coaching Module provided by U.S. Soccer. The pathway a coach chooses is ultimately a personal preference, based on their level of experience, the age groups they are currently coaching, and the age groups they plan to coach in the future.
Newton Girls Soccer players deserve the best playing environment and opportunities for development. Our coaches are strongly encouraged to further their coaching education. NGS will reimburse the cost of license course registration fees for all coaches.
As a minimum, ALL Coaches (Grades 2 – 8) must take the following online course as a prerequisite to coaching and obtaining more advanced licenses, including the playing format courses. The introductory module takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Age-Appropriate Playing Format Courses are mandatory for ALL Head Coaches (grade 2 and older) and optional for assistant coaches. Each online module takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
NGS will regularly host and provide in-person opportunities to participate in official license courses through MA Youth Soccer. In-person modules consist of 2 hours in the classroom and 2 hours in the field.
US Soccer Coaching Courses are available both in person and online.

As coaches continue with Newton Girls Soccer and move through the age groups, they are encouraged to work up the license pathway. Licenses are one of our criteria taken into consideration when it comes to selecting coaches for BAYS Travel teams.
After completing the prerequisite grassroots courses, a coach may take their first step towards the Pro Pathway by taking the U.S. Soccer D coaching course.

So much of what a successful coach does has nothing to do with their knowledge of soccer! As part of our commitment to building a positive environment for our athletes and coaches, NGS has an ongoing partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Each year, NGS hosts a 2-hour highly interactive coach workshop. Participants gain tools and tips for teaching young athletes not only how to win, but also how to learn about teamwork, discipline, respect and goal setting through their sports experience. Attendees learn how to pursue sustained success for their athletes both on and off the field by developing competitors and life skills through sports.
Participants walk away from the workshop as PCA-certified Positive Coaches, who know how to establish a Positive Youth Sports Culture where athletes feel safe, seen, heard, and valued.
The next NGS-sponsored Developing Competitors Through Positive Coaching Workshop will be held in spring 2024. NGS recommends the workshop for all coaches, especially Grade KG – 3 Coaches and any NEW Grade 4 – 8 Coaches.
Each eason, the NGS Director and Assistant Director of Coaching host clinics and other learning opportunities for our coaches. Keep an eye on your email for details.
