Coaching Opportunities

Coaching Qualifications

In order to maintain a high level of coaching, we have developed the following requirements for being a head coach (HC) or assistant coach (AC) of Juniors, City or Travel NGS team. Coaching a team includes teaching game skills, sportsmanship, team play, and other aspects of the game, as well as providing a high level of organization to the team both on and off the field.

NGS Grassroots Training Requirements

Newton Girls Soccer is committed to providing opportunities for continued education and development for all our coaches through coaching clinics and courses. US Soccer Coaching Courses are available both in person and online. Coaches are strongly encouraged to further their coaching education.

As a minimum, ALL Coaches (Grades 2 – 8) must take the following online course as a prerequisite to coaching and obtaining more advanced licenses, including the playing format courses.

Age-Appropriate Playing Format Courses are mandatory for ALL Head Coaches (grade 2 and older) and optional for assistant coaches.

NGS will regularly host and provide in-person opportunities to participate in official license courses through Mass Youth Soccer.

NGS will reimburse the cost of license registration fees for all coaches.  For reimbursement, email your receipt and certificate of completion to registrar@newtongirlssoccer.org. Reimbursement requests must include a name and mailing address.

Parent coaches are assigned to their daughter’s team. When several parents volunteer to coach the same team, the head coach will be chosen based on proven coaching experience, coaching education level and commitment to youth sports. Note that because we are an all-girls league, preference is always given to female coaches when their qualifications are otherwise identical to those of a male volunteer.

Eligibility and Order of Preference for all NGS Coaches:

  • Parent, guardian, or grandparent of a player
  • Female community members (e.g., college players, former players, etc.)
  • High School girls coaching a team without any sibling on it (exceptions can be made, on a case by case basis, with more than 5 year age gap between player and high school sibling)

MYSA Coaches Code of Conduct

All coaches are expected to abide by the MYSA Coaches Code of Conduct. NGS reserves the right to discipline, suspend or remove any coach for failure to follow the Code.

CORI/Kidssafe

All coaches and NGS officials must fill out the Mass Youth Soccer CORI/Kidssafe Disclosure statement.

Opportunities for Youth

High School-Age Coaching Program

Newton Girls Soccer is always looking for high school girls interested in becoming an assistant coach for our City teams in grades 2-6. The league is also looking for a limited number of girls to help as assistant coaches with the younger age groups in our BAYS Travel Program. If you are a 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader, you are eligible to volunteer as a coach or assistant coach with NGS.

The job is a rewarding one: It will allow you to work with the soccer skills you have learned and now use so effectively as a player, and will give you a chance to instruct our younger players, providing them and you with an outstanding soccer experience. As a coach, you will also serve as a role model for these younger players.

Juniors K/1 Assistant Coach Program

Newton Girls Soccer is also looking for 9th through 12th grade girls interested in helping with coaching our kindergarten and 1st grade teams. The K/1 curriculum focuses heavily on teaching skills and technique. As an assistant coach, you would work with the NGS Pro Trainers, highlight all the things the players are doing well, and help create a FUN learning environment. Their are two 1st Grade 75 min sessions at 8.30am and 10.00am, and one Kindergarten 60 min session at 11.30am on Saturday mornings . You would be assigned to two or three sessions each Saturday, and you would be expected to be available for about 75% of the sessions.

To volunteer, please contact Director of Coaching Shaun McBrien by Mid August for the fall season and Mid March for the spring season. NGS will provide a small coaching stipend to high school aged coaches.
