Coaching Licenses

US Soccer Grassroots Coaching Education

In February 2018, U.S. Soccer launched eight new grassroots level coaching courses. Offered in-person or online, the 4v4, 7v7, 9v9, and 11v11 courses focus on empowering coaches through experiential learning and a player-centered approach. The courses relate directly to small-sided games and the respective age-groups outlined in the Player Development Initiatives. The online versions of the 4v4, 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11 courses are available through the US Soccer Digital Coaching Center platform.

In addition to the grassroots license course opportunities, the D course has also been updated in accordance with the revamped approach at the grassroots level. Concurrently with the roll-out of the new courses, the current F and E courses will transition out of the U.S. Soccer Coaching Pathway. These licenses will still be recognized by U.S. Soccer and both certifications remain relevant as a means to advance within the pathway.  However, coaches who currently hold the U.S. Soccer G, F, or E License are still required to take the Introduction to Grassroots Coaching module and one additional grassroots course.

NGS Grassroots Training Requirements

Newton Girls Soccer is committed to providing opportunities for continued education and development for all our coaches through coaching clinics and courses. US Soccer Coaching Courses are available both in person and online. Coaches are strongly encouraged to further their coaching education.

As a minimum, ALL Coaches (Grades 2 – 8) must take the following online course as a prerequisite to coaching and obtaining more advanced licenses, including the playing format courses.

Age-Appropriate Playing Format Courses are mandatory for ALL Head Coaches (grade 2 and older) and optional for assistant coaches.

NGS will regularly host and provide in-person opportunities to participate in official license courses through Mass Youth Soccer.

NGS will reimburse the cost of license registration fees for all coaches.  For reimbursement, email your receipt and certificate of completion to registrar@newtongirlssoccer.org. Reimbursement requests must include a name and mailing address.

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) Workshop

Additional US Soccer or USC Licensing

As coaches continue with Newton Girls Soccer and move through the age groups, they are encouraged to work up the license pathway. Licenses are also one of our criteria taken into consideration when it comes to selecting coaches for BAYS Travel teams. NGS periodically hosts either US Soccer or USC courses, while you can find a master list of courses being held across the state at Mass Youth Soccer.
