‘Play the NGS Way’

At Newton Girls Soccer our philosophy of how we play the beautiful game is centered on player development and the enjoyment of the game. We as a club aim to develop skilled, confident and creative soccer players in a FUN, positive learning environment teaching them all aspects of the game based on the four pillars of players development (Technical, Tactical, Physical & Psychological skills)

The style in which we aspire to have our teams play is key to this, and these principles should always be encouraged, never forgotten in search of ‘wins’, and ultimately become part of the identity of the club.

Below are 5 key principles that help make-up the ‘Play the NGS Way”

(please click on the links to examples of these principles of play in action)

  1. The “Total Footballer’ – At NGS we try to give players the tools to be an all round Total Footballer. We strive to create technically skilled players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet and can perform a range of roles within the team. We strongly encourage the rotation of players through all positions rather than specialize players into one position.
  2. Creativity – NGS players are encouraged to be creative on the field. We want players to express themselves by trying 1v1 skills and moves. Flair Players like Brazil’s Martha is a great example of a highly skilled female soccer player.
  3. Possession – NGS teams look to control games through ball possession and retention. As a team we try to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible and understand the importance of maintaining possession and selecting the right opportunities to try and penetrate and score. Modern day teams such as Barcelona and Spain are great examples using the Tika Taka style of play.
  4. Playing Out from the Back – NGS teams try to pass the ball out from the goalkeeper and defenders into midfield and forward players. They do not ‘punt /boot’ or kick the ball up-field without a purpose or thought behind their decision. Play the game the beautiful way!
  5. Teamwork – No sports team is successful without working together to reach a common goal. In the words of Mia Hamm ex-USWNT “I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.”
